What will HMRC’s changes mean for small businesses?

HMRC are rolling out some significant changes to they way it operates, the plan being to create 13 new Regional centres over the next five years. They will also continue to shift the emphasis towards digital services.

Quick and easy access to relevant online services could result in real benefits for small business owners and sole traders. Potentially these changes could assist in the automation of tax returns; access to relevant information is much quicker and also hopefully this will also lead to customer queries being answered more quickly.

HMRC states “investment in new online services, data analytics, new compliance techniques, new skills and new ways of working, to make it easier for the honest majority of customers to pay their tax” whilst also announcing improvements to their overall customer service.”

With the emphasis shifting gradually from paper to digital this could make all HMRC related processes much easier to access and organise, which can only be a good thing for SMEs.
